Moon Cactus

Pattern for crocheting the Moon Cactus by Hardicraft. The cactus is 17 cm tall and is made with a 2.5 mm crochet hook.

  1. 1. Potting Soil

    You start at the top of the potting soil. 

    Ch 2 with brown or start with a magic ring. 

    1. 6 sc in the 1st ch or in the magic ring, 1 sl in the 1st sc (= 6 sc) 

    2. 2 sc in each sc (= 12 sc) 

    3. 2 sc in every 2nd sc (= 18 sc) 

    4. 6 x (1 sc, 2 sc in the next sc, 1 sc) (= 24 sc) 

    5. 2 sc in every 4th sc (= 30 sc) 

    6. 6 x (2 sc, 2 sc in the next sc, 2 sc) (= 36 sc) 

    7. 2 sc in every 6th sc (= 42 sc) 

    8. 6 x (3 sc, 2 sc in the next sc, 3 sc) (= 48 sc)

    Stuff the potting soil.

    Fasten off. Pull the yarn end through the remaining 6 stitches and pull tight.

  2. 2. Pot

    You start at the bottom of the pot. 

    Ch 2 with light pink or start with a magic ring. 

    1. 6 sc in the 1st ch or in the magic ring, 1 sl in the 1st sc (= 6 sc) 

    2. 2 sc in each sc (= 12 sc) 

    3. 2 sc in every 2nd sc (= 18 sc) 

    4. 6 x (1 sc, 2 sc in the next sc, 1 sc) (= 24 sc) 

    5. 2 sc in every 4th sc (= 30 sc) 

    6. 30 sc, crochet only in the back loops. 

    7. 6 x (2 sc, 2 sc in the next sc, 2 sc) (= 36 sc) 

    8. 2 sc in every 6th sc (= 42 sc) 

    9. 6 x (3 sc, 2 sc in the next sc, 3 sc) (= 48 sc) 

    10. 2 sc in every 8th sc (= 54 sc)

    12. - 25. 60 sc 

    Attach the safety eyes between rounds 18 and 19. Leave 9 stitches free between the eyes. 

    26. 60 sc, crochet only in the front loops. 

    27. and 28. 60 sc 

    Fold the last 3 rounds over to make the edge of the pot. Cut the yarn at 30 cm. Put the potting soil in the pot, sew the edge and the potting soil with a few stitches. Weave the yarn inwards. 

    Embroider a mouth with brown at the level of round 18 by stitching over 2 stitches. Make blushes with red under the eyes. Use the photos as a guide for placement.

  3. 3. Legs (make 2)

    You start with the feet. 

    Ch 2 with brown or start with a magic ring. 

    1. 6 sc in the 1st ch or in the magic ring, 1 sl in the 1st sc (= 6 sc) 

    2. 2 sc in each sc (= 12 sc) 

    3. - 5. 12 sc 

    6. 2 x (sc 2 st together), 8 sc (= 10 sc) 

    7. 2 x (sc 2 st together), 6 sc (= 8 sc) 

    8. 2 x (sc 2 st together), 4 sc (= 6 sc)

    9. - 15. 6 sc 

    Flatten the legs and let the toes point upwards. Sew the legs at the level of round 7 of the pot. Leave 6 stitches free between the legs. Make sure the feet point outwards.

  4. 4. Cactus

    You start at the top of the cactus. 

    Ch 2 with green or start with a magic ring. 

    1. 6 sc in the 1st ch or in the magic ring, 1 sl in the 1st sc (= 6 sc) 

    2. 2 sc in each sc (= 12 sc) 

    3. 2 sc in every 2nd sc (= 18 sc) 

    4. 6 x (1 sc, 2 sc in the next sc, 1 sc) (= 24 sc) 

    5. 2 sc in every 4th sc (= 30 sc) 

    6. 6 x (2 sc, 2 sc in the next sc, 2 sc) (= 36 sc) 

    7. 2 sc in every 6th sc (= 42 sc) 

    8. 6 x (3 sc, 2 sc in the next sc, 3 sc) (= 48 sc) 

    9. - 23. 48 sc 

    Fasten off, but do not cut the yarn too short. Push the crochet work inwards at four places to form a cross and sew the sides together (see photos). Sew the cactus securely in the centre of the soil disc.

  5. 5. Ball

    You start at the top of the ball. 

    Crochet 2 ch with red or start with a magic ring. 

    1. 6 sc in the 1st ch or in the magic ring, 1 sl in the 1st sc (= 6 sc) 

    2. 2 sc in each sc (= 12 sc) 

    3. 2 sc in every 2nd sc (= 18 sc) 

    4. 6 x (1 sc, 2 sc in the next sc, 1 sc) (= 24 sc) 

    5. 2 sc in every 4th sc (= 30 sc) 

    6. 6 x (2 sc, 2 sc in the next sc, 2 sc) (= 36 sc) 

    7. - 12. 36 sc 

    13. 6 x (2 sc, sc 2 st together, 2 sc) (= 30 sc) 

    14. 6 x (3 sc, sc 2 st together) (= 24 sc) 

    15. 6 x (1 sc, sc 2 st together, 1 sc) (= 18 sc) 

    Stuff the ball. 

    16. 6 x (1 sc, sc 2 st together) (= 12 sc) 

    17. 6 x (sc 2 st together) (= 6 sc) 

    Fasten off. Pull the yarn end through the remaining 6 stitches and pull tight. Weave the yarn inwards. Cut a light pink yarn of 60 cm, and thread it from bottom to top through the ball. Pull the yarn tight so that the top and bottom of the ball indent slightly. Repeat this seven times, sew the yarn securely at the bottom of the ball and weave the yarn inwards. Sew the ball onto the top of the cactus.

  6. 6. Small ball

    You start at the top of the small ball. 

    Crochet 2 ch with red or start with a magic ring. 

    1. 6 sc in the 1st ch or in the magic ring, 1 sl in the 1st sc (= 6 sc) 

    2. 2 sc in each sc (= 12 sc)

    3. - 5. 12 sc 

    Stuff the small ball. 

    6. 6 x (sc 2 st together) (= 6 sc) 

    Fasten off. Pull the yarn end through the remaining 6 stitches and pull tight. Sew the small ball at the level of rounds 5 and 6 onto the large ball.
